In 1981, the first Indianapolis Pride event was hosted at the Essex Hotel downtown, where many attendees wore masks not to be recognized. Today, Indy Pride, Inc. hosts events with over 55,000 attendees led by Executive Director, Chris Handberg. In this episode, we learn Chris’s story, which begins with the recollection of him coming out while working as a youth pastor in Anderson. When his church community did not react positively to the news, he decided to resign and began working as a Family Violence Outreach Advocate at The Julian Center. He then moved to Indianapolis to work as a teacher and for the Domestic Violence Network before joining the Indy Pride board. During this time, the Indy Pride team recognized that it needed a full-time leader. Chris was encouraged to apply and has been with the organization as its first full-time employee for three years. Tune in to learn about how Indy Pride serves the LGBTQ community by providing resources for businesses to better support the community, by hosting numerous social events each year that create potentially life-saving social connections within the community, and by acting as a leader for LGBTQ rights. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you with Chris Handberg from Indy Pride.
